A Brief History of the Universe

Below is my understanding of the first 6 days of the Universe starting from the big bang. My understanding is based upon peer-reviewed science and traditional biblical commentary published by noted M.I.T Physicist and Theologian Gerald R. Schroeder in his great book “The Science of God.”

It begins with the concepts that Albert Einstein published around 1904 in which he said that Matter can be made from Energy, and that the flow of time is not a constant. Or, time is relative based upon the position of the observer.

It is with the relative time concept that I am fascinated with as it begins to explain one of life’s greatest questions…”Is the Earth Six days old, or Billions of years old?” And the answer based upon peer-reviewed science by Professor Schroeder is….”Yes!” It all depends upon your point of reference.

Time is relative, and once we define some timeframes we will discuss the mathematical concepts behind his answer:

The following definitions and charts are adapted, (not quoted), from Dr. Schroeder’s Book “The Science of God.”

Cosmic Days – This is based upon the first day of the big bang looking forward in time with each cosmic day being relative in that each cosmic day gets shorter based upon the Cosmic Background Radiation, (CBR), temperature.

Cosmic Earth Years – This is the number of Earth years that are passing as the Universe is forming.

Earth Days – This is based upon the first day on Earth looking backward in time using our current 24-hour clock.

Adam Years – The number of earth years before Adam, based upon the current 24-hour clock.

The timeframes are based upon the cooling of the Universe. At the time of the big bang the temperature of the Universe was it’s hottest and it has been cooling ever since. The current temperature of space is 2.73 degrees Kelvin, approximately 270 degrees Celsius.

The age of the Universe has been revised upward constantly and in 2003 it was revised once again. From Space.com…“In a study published today in the journal Science, a team of researchers says the universe is between 11.2 billion and 20 billion years old.
Most estimates in recent years have ranged between 10 billion and 15 billion years. Last year, data supplied by the Hubble Space Telescope led to an apparently refined estimate of 13 billion to 14 billion years.”

Some estimates are made using visual readings such as through a telescope, they are sometimes called “red-shift”, or “blue-shift” depending upon the method, and then others using math and the C.B.R. as Dr. Schroeder has done.

What is even more interesting to me is how the authors of the Bible “guessed 100% correctly” on how evolution progressed through these Cosmic Days of Creation. (They couldn't have known, they must have guessed, right?)

For example, the bible says water occurred before any life, and that the first living creatures were in the water, next reptiles and then winged animals, then humans. I wonder if Darwin and others looked at the sequence in the Bible to figure out the sequence of Evolution? (tongue in cheek) See the next chart below
: (Click Chart to Enlarge:)

The above is presented as something to contemplate. I know there will be some who will take it as some kind of affront to their worldview and summarily dismiss it, and probably attack it as well, but that is to be expected since one of the laws of the Universe is that there needs to be opposites so we will be able to have choice.

Now whether God had a hand in fine tuning Evolution, such as "sprinking" some new life forms from time-to-time, such as the "Cambrian Explosion", well that is for another post.

Yes time is indeed relative. But your entire argument is fatally flawed my friend.

We base all of our time on earth days. The earth has been here for about 4.5 billion years the universe about 14 billion. That still does not fit the Bible that was supposed to be the word of God given to man so he can understand the world.

Did God not realize we would evolve to the point were we would not only begin understanding the world but the universe as a whole.

I am sorry, but trying to rationalize a scientific truth to fit the bible is wrong. If you chose to believe in God fine, if not fine, but do not change facts to fit your beliefs. I know you did not personally come up with this and you and others are only trying to fit your preconceived world view.

The the Earth has been here for approx. 4.5 Billion years.

I do not have a preconceived world view and my understanding of the universe may change as scientific questions and facts are answered. You on the other hand are saying you already know everything and you and others are simply perverting science to fit your beliefs.

"The earth has been here for about 4.5 billion years..."

So...?

Where do you get this idea that the Bible is describing the amount of time of the "Earths" existence?

"In the Beginning, (read Big Bang), God created the Heavens and Earth." Not just the Earth.

I think Professor Schroeder does and outstanding job of using the "CBR" to point out how long it was until Man appeared on Earth, and not how old the Earth was, because that is not what Genesis is saying, it is saying how old was the Universe....16 Billion years or 6 days according to different views of time. CBR time vs. Earth Time looking backward.

I don't "know everything" and in fact I am changing my views based upon science...CBR measurement of the M.I.T. Science Professors view of how well the Bible description of how the Universe and Earth unfolded, and I "Currently" think this is the best explanation until something better comes along.

Truth is truth and Science and the Bible must agree if they are both true, and this is the best explanation by a Scientist I have seen that says they do.

"I do not have a preconceived world view"

I think it is clear that everyone has a preconceived world view at any given time in their life, and that that that world view can change based upon new information.

I think your world view is that it is impossible for the Bible to be true in any sense and that you are stuck there and unable to change no matter what science says.

But I love having discussions with people I differ as you have and can influence me. Not sure I can influnce you though.

There needs to be opposition in all things in order for their to be choice and if truth were easy, then we would all have the same world view.

B-T-W, The Bible talks of "relative time" in several places.

In fact, the Bible says that from God's viewpoint each day is a thousand years of our time. (2 Pet. 3: 8)
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

It is good to note that when God told Adam that if he ate of the Fruit he would die that day....(he lived 930 years...less than a day of God's time.)

Good Stuff.

FAR="I think your world view is that it is impossible for the Bible to be true in any sense and that you are stuck there and unable to change no matter what science says."

So you think science backs up the Bible as truth? Or are some scientists trying to make the Bible true?

Bible quotes?????????????
FAR-"In the Beginning, (read Big Bang), God created the Heavens and Earth." Not just the Earth."

Maybe God created the universe maybe not I do not know. However the Bible, if you are to follow it literally says the earth is way to young even if you throw in a thousand years to a day.

Also things in the Bible like the Earth being formed before the sun are not true.

Bible Quotes
"Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters."
"God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
"God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness.""

Obviously science does not agree with this. The consensus on the formation of our solar system as well as the stars and other planets is well known to most.

The Bible says the Earth is older than the Sun which is false.
The land and trees did not appear in two days (two thousand years God Time). There was no life on Earth for BILLIONS of years since conditions would have been inhospitable for any life.

We can throw Quotes around all day and it proves nothing other than You believe a book written by men nearly two thousand years ago is true and can be used as science.

As I have said many times I do not know if there is a God, I do not know which Holy book or version a said holy book a God would prefer.

Billions of people from different religions are convinced they have the right book and the right belief and I find it odd that a being as powerful as God would put so many different religions on earth that are separated mostly by geography.

Just my view.

P.S.

Here is the order of events in the chart as described in the bible.

Day 1 - Creation of the Universe.
Day 2 - Formation of the Heavans (Stars and Sun.)
Day 3 - Earth is cooled and water appears. (Earth formed Sometime between Day 2 and Day 3 as at 3.75 Billion there is dry land.)
Day 4 - Sun, Moon and Stars become "visible." Atmosphere becomes "transparent" so the stars can be seen.
Day 5 - Animals appear in water.
Day 6 - Land animals including man appear.

I don't understand your thinking that the above events are different in the bible as the chart shows the sequence I have described above.

TorC: "The Bible says the Earth is older than the Sun which is false."

Where does the bible say that?

"God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
"God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness."

In the quote above it is talking about Day 4 when the atmosphere was not yet transparant and the Light could not yet be seen from the earth, so God made the atmosphere transparant and then light, (the stars), could be seen from earth.

God is on earth, (standing or "hovering" over the oceans or "waters".) From there he then made the stars visible from his vantage point and next made the earth rotate so as to provide night and day (seperate the light from the darkness.)

I don't believe that the Bible can be used as science. Merely that if both are true, then they can't disagree on anything that can be proven.

Again, not everything can be proven, but on the things that can be, then they must agree or one is wrong.

Belief by definition can not be proven, for if it was, then it would cease to be belief.

TorC "Maybe God created the universe maybe not I do not know."

On this we agree. I do not "know" either, I merely "believe."

Science can't prove God does not exist, and I can't prove God does exist anymore than I can prove or you can disprove that "Love" exists.

Not everything can be "proven." Science only knows facts and it only knows about 5% about the Universe. The other 95% of the Universe they say they not only don't "know" but they say they have not been able to even measure it. They call it "Dark Matter" and "Dark Energy."

I am not saying and the bible does not say that the "earth" is only 6 thousand years old, merely that as the 16 billion earth years passed it was only 6 "CBR" days or 6 earth days looking backward in time as per the chart.

The statement that to God a day is the same as a Thousand of our years is a Non sequitur when it comes to the age of the Universe. I only mentioned it to show how Time was known to be *Relative* even back when Moses wrote the first 5 books in it.

Please look at the chart and you will see that the bible "agrees" with science on the sequence of when the stars formed and when the earth was formed.
